In the world of financial planning, where numbers often dominate the conversation, Sabrina Bailey stands out as a compassionate and knowledgeable Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).

Sabrina’s journey into the financial planning industry was a serendipitous one, shaped by her background and a deep-rooted desire to make a difference in people’s lives.

"Growing up on a council estate in a relatively deprived area of Liverpool instilled in me a desire to help people make their lives better"

How a holiday romance led to a career in financial planning

Sabrina’s path to becoming an IFA was far from conventional. She studied psychology and sociology at Liverpool University, with aspirations of working in a vocational field like support or social work. “Growing up on a council estate in a relatively deprived area of Liverpool instilled in me a strong work ethic, a drive to excel academically and a desire to help people make their lives better.”

A chance holiday romance led to a move to Essex, where she initially found a job in a call centre. Little did Sabrina know that this move would eventually lead her to the world of financial planning. She soon transitioned into a role as a business development manager, representing large insurance companies such as Aviva, Aegon, and Royal London. After 15 years in this role, Sabrina gained an in-depth understanding of the financial advisory landscape.

At this point, Sabrina’s life took an unexpected turn. “At the age of 39, I was made redundant. I didn’t know what to do. I was at a crossroads. It was one of my IFA clients who suggested that I become an IFA. I’d already completed many of the financial qualifications, so I decided to give it a go and launched into a new career.”

Fast forward five years, and Sabrina is now a qualified IFA on the cusp of achieving chartered status. Her journey from call centre to trusted financial adviser reflects her resilience, adaptability, and drive to help others.

Empathy and understanding

Becoming an IFA appealed to Sabrina because of her desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives. “I’ve always been the go-to person for friends seeking advice on various aspects of life, from career choices to relationship problems. Becoming an IFA is, in a way, an extension of this. I enjoy offering guidance and support to people – whether they’re friends or clients.”

Sabrina’s approach to helping clients plan for their financial future is grounded in empathy and understanding. “I take the time to listen and get to know my clients, even when they might not fully understand their own needs. Many people don’t always have a clear vision of their financial goals,” explains Sabrina, “I simply ask the right questions to help them discover what they really want out of life.”

“I believe that the best financial advisers are those who can relate to their clients’ experiences and provide guidance beyond just the numbers. My life hasn’t all been plain sailing. I know what it’s like to struggle to buy your first home, deal with a surprise redundancy and navigate into a new career relatively late in life.

“My job is about understanding my clients’ anxieties, fears, and aspirations. It’s about more than just wealth accumulation, important as that is; it’s also about educating them on their finances so they can make better choices.”

"Mental health has become a prominent concern in our industry, especially in the context of rising living costs, mortgages, and rent"

Building a secure financial future

Managing clients’ expectations is another crucial aspect of Sabrina’s role. “Sometimes, the best financial path may not align with a client’s ultimate goals. I am always honest and open with people; if their goals aren’t achievable, we’ll talk about what is. Then I can help them create a more realistic financial plan that gives them a good life and a secure future.”

Sabrina’s clients include active 85-year-olds as well as young families. She particularly enjoys working with younger clients, helping them to establish sound financial principles from the start.

“By listening to what they want from life and carefully constructing a plan, I’m able to instil in them the importance of budgeting, saving, and starting a pension early. I use my own experience as an example. I began saving for my pension at a young age, and as a result, I now have a clear retirement plan. I’m passionate about enabling younger generations to build financial security into their lives – from buying their first home, protecting their family, to planning a comfortable retirement.”

Financial security and mental health

“Mental health has become a prominent concern in our industry, especially in the context of rising living costs, mortgages, and rent,” explains Sabrina. “We see time and time again the problems poor financial management and debt can have on people’s mental health.

“I believe an IFA’s responsibility extends beyond financial advice. When I have a review with my clients, they don’t just talk about money; they share their life experiences, from divorce to family problems. These personal challenges impact their financial well-being, highlighting the interconnected nature of life and finance.”

Sabrina recently helped a couple who had accumulated significant debt, which was affecting both their mental and physical health. “During prosperous times, they were able to manage the debt. But when their son suddenly developed a mental health problem and needed financial support, their financial stability crumbled. Rising mortgage rates, health problems, and reduced income created a perfect storm of stress.”

Sabrina continues: “I guided them through various scenarios, including accessing some of their savings to alleviate the immediate financial stress. The couple now has a prudent financial plan to rebuild their investments and secure their future.”

Away from work

In her leisure time, Sabrina embraces the great outdoors, “I have two dogs and love nothing better than exploring the beautiful Essex and Suffolk countryside with them at my side.

“I’m also honing my culinary skills, thanks to lessons from my dad, a former Chinese chef. And you’ll find me most mornings in the gym at 6.15 am – yes, I am that morning person! But I love it – it sets me up for the day, helping me maintain my mind and body!”
