Private medical insurance

People tend to take out Private medical insurance (PMI), or Private Health Insurance (PHI), when they want choice, flexibility and speed when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of certain medical and health conditions.

This type of insurance can be expensive (and it gets more so with age), although basic cover plans are available and typically cover in-patient and day-care treatments. The more expensive plans provide benefits including a private hospital room, payment for hospital stays and specialist physiotherapy. Some employers offer PMI as part of their employee benefits package.

Whilst PMI can help you avoid long waiting lists, and give you access to specialist consultancy and surgeries, the services provided by the NHS, particularly in terms of cancer care and accute medical care, might be all you need.

That’s why you should consider your options and budget carefully before taking out a plan.
