Sustainable Investing

What is sustainable investing?

Sustainable investing essentially means putting your money into companies who are demonstrably working to improve our society and environment. According to 2023 research from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), 81% of UK consumers want their money to do good - as well as grow. Driven by concern for issues like climate change, social inequality and environmental damage, many people have now made sustainability an important part of their investment strategy.

‘Sustainability’ in investing has meant different things to different people in recent years. This has resulted in a range of labels, descriptions and standards – often leading to confusion about what ‘sustainable investing’ actually is.

In 2024, the FCA introduced measures to tackle this. Now, a fund with specific environmental or social goals can only use the term ‘sustainable’ if it has met certain conditions. It must also carry a new label, to help potential investors identify if it aligns with their own sustainability objectives. You can read about the FCA’s sustainability investment labels here.

If you’d like your money to be a force for good, speak to an independent financial adviser who can explain your options when it comes to sustainable investing.

Like any investment, sustainable investing carries risk. Your investment can go up as well as down and you may not get back the full amount invested.
