Reaching our 50th anniversary isn't really about longevity. It's about people.

This week we celebrate the 50th anniversary of DB Wood. Reaching 50 is an important milestone for individuals and businesses alike. Of course, like many 50-year-olds, a lot has changed since 1976. All though it doesn’t seem that long ago, Abba’s dancing Queen was number one in the UK charts, and Ford dominated the car market with the Escort and Cortina as the best sellers, closely followed by Mini, Morris Marina and Austin Allegro!

Reaching our 50th anniversary isn’t really about longevity. It’s about people.

The colleagues who have built the business over five decades. The advisers who have supported generations of families, and the clients who have trusted us to guide them through some of life’s biggest decisions.

It is important to find time to consider our progress through life’s journey. I guess that’s why milestone birthdays exist. They are useful beyond the celebration with friends and family, to take stock and to look for reasons why we shouldn’t take things for granted. A time then for reflection, appreciation and to reset our vision. Unlike an individual, who gains experience to compensate for the aging process, a well-run business can remain vibrant through effective recruitment, working with great clients, and building long lasting relationships, supported by a positive and progressive culture.

Over time we have navigated many investment market crashes, and subsequent rallies, sometimes aligned to economic boom and bust, sometimes not. Technological and financial regulation has been rampant in the last 25 years, the rise and demise of globalisation, and geopolitical conflicts and unrest. Never a dull moment for sure. However, despite the fast pace of change and disruption, our growth over 50 years has been supported by our excellent team who have decades of experience, share knowledge, and are supportive of each other, understand the power of listening, enjoy working together and above all put our clients first.

We are of course nothing without our clients. It is therefore wonderful to see so many who have remained with us throughout the journey, and many more who have been with us for several decades. We have many examples of families where the children were running round the garden as toddlers and are now working with our young advisers as part of our inter-generational wealth program, or that business owner who started from his garage, and navigates an exit into a successful retirement. These are the long-term plans that we strive to help create and deliver. They remain a key motivation behind our commercial objectives.

So, whether you’ve been with us for three months, three years, or three decades, thank you for allowing us to play a small part in your journey. The world will continue to change, as it always has, but our purpose remains the same: helping clients make better financial decisions and enjoy greater peace of mind.

Here’s to the next chapter and thank you for being part of our story.
